Milestone in NZ Aluminium Industry History

NALCO staff and ex Alcan workers met in Manukau late last month to mark 10 years since the closure of the original Alcan Aluminium Manufacturing Plant in Wiri. Up to 50 current and former staff from as far a field as Christchurch gathered together, some of whom hadn’t seen each other for 10-12 years.

Opened in 1961 at a cost of over £2.25 million, the Wiri manufacturing facility heralded a new era in the New Zealand Aluminium Industry. The first and only aluminium rolling mill in New Zealand, established in Wiri, Manukau and one of the first aluminium extrusion facilities in New Zealand.

NALCO was formed out of the assets of Capral, formerly Alcan, retaining its vast experience and history in aluminium, boasting a number of its most experienced industry veterans within its ranks.

Thanks to Dave Bilton and Susan Fisher for organising the event, with all agreeing it should be repeated next year.
