Aluminium - The Green Metal
Despite aluminium’s young age in a commercial context it is the worlds second most used metal after steel, with the demand for aluminium continuing to lift year by year.
Behind its continued growth is its ability to combine functionality and cost-effectiveness with forward looking form and design potential.
Aluminium is the third most abundant material in the earths crust (around 8%), so Bauxite extraction requires minimal land use compared to most other materials
- A typical brick wall contains 10 - 20kg’s of aluminium per square metre. While one square metre of aluminium wall cladding typically uses 2kg’s .
Once produced aluminium is forever a renewable, 100% recyclable resource, provided it is collected and recycled at the end of a products life.
- Aluminium is infinitely recyclable without loosing any of its unique properties, requiring only 5% of the original energy input to reproduce.
- Approximately 75% of all aluminium ever produced since 1888 is still in productive use, some having been through countless loops of its lifecycle .
- Globally, aluminium achieves among the highest material recycling rates, with up to 90% for transport and construction applications
When used to replace heavier materials aluminium enables reductions in other resources throughout the life of the product.
- The use of one kilogram of aluminium to replace heavier materials in a car or light truck can save a net 20kg of CO2 over the life of the vehicle. This figure is even higher for more weight sensitive applications (for instance, up to 80kg CO2 saved per kg of aluminium used in trains).
- It has been estimated that by 2030 the increased use of aluminium in the transport industry, will potentially save enough fuel to offset all the greenhouse gases produced by the aluminium industry world wide.
Aluminium products are sustainable and have the potential to be part of the solution of combating climate change.
